गांधी, मार्टिन लूथर किंग (जू.) के विचारों को बढ़ावा देने का कानून
अमेरिकी संसद की प्रतिनिधिसभा ने बृहस्पतिवार को एक कानून पारित किया जो महात्मा गांधी और मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर के कार्यों एवं उनके विचारों पर अध्ययन के लिए भारत तथा अमेरिका के बीच द्विपक्षीय आदान-प्रदान कार्यक्रमों को बढ़ावा देगा।
कानून के मसौदे को मानवाधिकार कार्यकर्ता और पूर्व सांसद जॉन लेविस ने तैयार किया था, जिनका इस साल निधन हो गया। भारतवंशी सांसद डा. एमी बेरा ने इस विधेयक का समर्थन किया था। इस कानून के जरिए अमेरिका भारत पब्लिक प्राइवेट डेवलपमेंट फाउंडेशन की स्थापना होगी और महात्मा गांधी तथा मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर के अहिंसक विरोध के सिद्धांतों पर अध्ययन एवं द्विपक्षीय आदान-प्रदान कार्यक्रमों को बढ़ावा दिया जाएगा। सदन की विदेश मामलों की समिति के अध्यक्ष एलियट इंगेल ने कहा, इस कानून के बाद दोनों देश गांधी और किंग के सिद्धांतों पर
अध्ययना करेंगे तथा जलवायु परिवर्तन, शिक्षा एवं लोक स्वास्थ्य समेत कई अन्य मददों पर साथ मिलकर काम करेंगे।
बेरा ने कहा, दुनिया के सबसे पुराने और सबसे बड़े लोकतंत्रों के रूप में, अमेरिका और भारत में साझा मूल्यों को बनाए रखने की लंबी परंपरा है, जिसे गांधी, किंग और अमेरिकी सांसद लेविस जैसी महान शख्सियतों ने बढ़ावा दिया।
कानून में यह भी प्रावधान है कि विदेश मंत्रालय भारत सरकार के सहयोग से 'गांधीकिंग स्कॉली एक्सचेंज इनिशिएटिव' कार्यक्रम की शुरुआत करेगा, जो अमेरिका और भारत से
शोधार्थियों के लिए वार्षिक शैक्षणिक मंच मुहैया कराएगा। 'गगांधी-किंग स्कॉलर्ली एक्सचेंज इनिशिएटिव के तहत 2025 तक प्रतिवर्ष 10 लाख अमेरिकी डॉलर के अनुदान का प्रावधान है। लेविस ने 2009 में भारत की यात्रा की थी और वहां मार्टिन लूथर किंग जनियर की याद में आयोजित एक कार्यक्रम में हिस्सा लिया था।

The US Parliament's delegation on Thursday passed a law that would promote bilateral exchange programs between India and the United States to study the works of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. and their views.
The draft law was drafted by human rights activist and former MP John Lewis, who died this year. The bill was endorsed by Dr. Amy Bera, Member of Parliament of India. Through this law, the US India Public Private Development Foundation will be established and study and bilateral exchange programs on the principles of non-violent protest of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. will be promoted. Eliot Ingel, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House, said, "After this law, both countries are based on the principles of Gandhi and King."

The law also provides that the Ministry of External Affairs, in collaboration with the Government of India, will initiate the 'Gandhiking Scoli Exchange Initiative' program from the US and India.
